What is the best domain name for my business?
This is a key question for your business. There are a number of considerations.
- Is the domain name you are thinking of easy to spell (and mis-spell)? A clear name will help potential customers find you. . Ensure you have covered other ways of spelling your domain name and have the other spellings redirect to your website e.g. onegroup.co.nz redirects to 1group.co.nz.
- Are you going to be doing a lot of advertising for your business name? Even if you are you may want to consider a domain name that states what you do or sell e.g. our website is websitedesignhosting.co.nz because we provide website design, design services and hosting services. Search engines will pick this up.
- Make sure your domain name is easy to remember. A domain name that is very long or uses symbols like ‘-‘ can be confusing. We use both our website domain name websitedesignhosting.co.nz and wdh.co.nz because the abbreviated version is easy to remember but our full domain name explains what we do as well as better indexed by search engines.
- Select relevant suffix. If you are marketing in New Zealand then you will want to use .co.nz or one of the many specialised Second Level Domain (SLD) domain names available with .nz at the end. If your target market is the USA or Australia then you will want to use .com or .com.au Do note that some countries like Australia have conditions for domain registration.
